Free Throw Specialist
Jan. 15, 2002 - "New Bulls coach Bill Cartwright isn’t afraid to take a page out of former boss Phil Jackson’s unorthodox coaching handbook. Or from the Guinness Book of World Records, either.

Hoping to improve his team’s poor foul shooting, Cartwright recently brought in a 79-year-old free throw specialist who is in the Guinness book for once making 2,750 straight.

Tom Amberry, a retired podiatrist from Seal Beach, Calif., who set the record in ’93 after taking up free throw shooting as a retirement hobby, worked with the Bulls last week in Chicago and plans to return periodically during the season. Part technical advisor and part motivational guru, he claims to help players find a comfortable mental approach when stepping to the line. "It’s all focus and concentration," he says. Cartwright, who also has had his team recite the Lord’s Prayer after practice, says he isn’t trying to become another Zen Master. He just feels that with the Bulls currently ranked 27th in the NBA in free throw accuracy -- ahead of only the Heat and Lakers -- at 70.2 percent, what is there to lose?

"My suggestion [to the players] was if you're shooting less than 70 percent, you should probably give him some time," Cartwright says."
