Cleopatra's Needle
In New York's Central Park, there stands a grand obelisk called "Cleopatra's Needle". It is more than 3500 years old and was constructed as a tribute to Egypt's Thutmosis III. There is a similar obelisk in London. Like all the fine monuments of the world, this ancient marvel has a recognition plaque (This one dates from 1940). It reads:This obelisk was erected first at Heliopolis, Egypt in 1600 B.C. It was removed to Alexandria in 12 B.C. by the Romans. Presented by the Khedive of Egypt to the City of New York, it was erected here on February 22, 1881 through the generosity of William H. Vanderbuilt. New York's granite tower is much aging and many of its hieroglyphics have been erased by age, wind, and weather. Read the translation of the hieroglyphs and enjoy learning more about this and other fascinating obelisks and monuments around the world. |
