During the season, a few major trades and acquisitions altered the makeup of the Spirits starting roster and bench. Early season, center Maurice Lucas was shipped to Kentucky for former San Diego Sail and shot blocking expert Caldwell Jones. Also, a major influx of new personnel came about as the result of the collapse of the Utah Stars. Moses Malone, Ron Boone, and Randy Denton were purchased from the defunct francise and became Spirits.
