Drafted on Round No. 8 by San Diego of NBA and on 11th round by Carolina of ABA in 1970. Traded by Houston (S.D.) with Larry Siegfried to Atlanta for Jim Davis and John Vallely in Nov., 1971. Traded by Atlanta to Detroit for a draft choice in Oct., 1972. Signed by Spirits as a free agent in March, 1975.

Regular season: 16 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists
Playoffs: 17 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists


Personal notes:
A valuable addition to the Spirits who stepped into the role of third forward and provided excellent defense…also considered one of the best passing forwards in pro basketball…nicknamed Maxwell Smart because of his name, that was shortened to Smart…1 of 3 Spirits who drive a Mercedes (Lucas and Gerard are the others)…communications and speech major in college, still interested in mass media…got offers to play football in college as a quarterback but didn't…also a first baseman and outfielder in baseball…avid golfer who shoots in 80s…still remembers twice getting the jump ball tip from Lew Alcindor in college…Dr. J. his toughest ABA opponent…married 4 ˝ years to wife, Mary, who had couple's first child, Don Jr., during playoffs last spring.
