Purchased by Spirits from Utah with Moses Malone, Ron Boone and Randy Denton…had been averaging 14.8 points, 7 rebounds a game as a rookie starter with Stars…broke wrist after only 2 games with Spirits and missed 15 games…chose Utah over Chicago, but says big decision was whether to pick basketball over dentistry…he had been accepted by Indiana U. dental school…still plans to enter dental school when his basketball career ends…1st player recruited at Indiana by Bobby Knight…in 3 years at IU, he was on teams with 76-12 record…went to final 4 in NCAA as sophomore, won CCA tourney in St. Louis as junior, lost in NCAA regional 3rd year after going 31-0…played 5 games at Arena in NCAA and CCA…developed his excellent shot by watching Jerry West and Oscar Robertson…father, Ray, was his high school coach…older brother started on same team and later played at Indiana State…younger brother now plays at Miami of Ohio…played on high school tennis team and still loves to play…also ran hurdles in track in high school when he was "lean and lanky" at 6-7, 190 pounds…he and wife, Lana, were married after he graduated last June…she also went to IU and is qualified as an optometric technician…they drive a van and hope to do a lot of traveling this summer, visiting friends such as David Thompson and Monte Towe, who Steve met when they played for a United States team against the Russians before his senior year.
